Firework Show Safety

Freedom

Watching a fireworks display can be thrilling, but safety is critical to ensure everyone enjoys the show without incident. Here are key safety tips for viewers, based on common recommendations from fire safety authorities and my understanding of the risks involved:

- **Keep a Safe Distance**: Stay at least 150 feet away from the launch site, fireworks can travel far and debris may fall. Follow designated viewing areas set by event organizers, which are calculated for safety based on the size of the fireworks.

- **Respect Barriers and Signs**: Obey all posted signs, barriers, and instructions from event staff or law enforcement. These are in place to keep you out of hazardous zones where misfires or fallout could occur.

- **Avoid Handling Fireworks**: Never pick up or approach fireworks, whether they appear used or unused. Even “duds” can ignite unexpectedly.

- **Protect Vulnerable Groups**: Keep children and pets far from the launch area. Children should be closely supervised to prevent them from running toward the display or picking up debris. Pets can be startled by loud noises, so consider leaving them at home or keeping them leashed and calm.

- **Be Aware of Surroundings**: Position yourself upwind if possible to avoid smoke and ash, which can irritate eyes and lungs. Watch for uneven ground or obstacles in crowded areas to avoid tripping or falling.

- **Clean-Up**:  Help with clean up is always welcomed, but don’t approach the launch site after the show. Fireworks debris can remain hot or unstable, please wait to assist until the area has been cleared by organizer.
